Day 2

Quito - Otavalo - San Roque - Andrade Marin - Ibarra - Quito

Depart Quito early in the morning for a one-and-a-half hour drive north towards Otavalo, Ecuador's most famous market. From here, board a steam train for the journey to San Roque, known for its Andean music and traditional weaving skills. There will be a stop at the Textile Museum at Andrade Marin and a visit to the skillful woodcarving workshops at San Antonio de Ibarra.

From Ibarra the journey back to Quito is by road, with a stop at Cayambe for a visit to a rose plantation and a traditional Andean lunch.

Day 3

Quito - Boliche - Urbina

Transfer to Quito Chimbacalle station and begin the journey south along the Avenue of Volcanoes. Weather permitting, you can spot up to twenty volcanoes from the train –most
of which are extinct or have been dormant for centuries. At El Boliche, near the Cotopaxi volcano, there is the opportunity to follow an Andean forest trail on a short hike.

With lunch onboard, the train will slowly climb up the Andean highlands to Urbina, the highest point in the itinerary at 11,800 feet above sea level (3595m). At Urbina, all being well, there will be a chance to meet Baltazar Ushca, the last ice-collector of Mount Chimborazo.

Continue to Riobamba station and transfer to your hotel by bus.

Day 4

Riobamba - Guamote - Devil's Nose - Bucay

Depart Riobamba for the journey by steam train towards Colta, where the Spanish conquerors built their first settlement in Ecuador. From here continue by diesel engine crossing colourful quinoa fields and passing indigenous villages and the remains of ancient cultures.

Visit Guamote market, one of the last indigenous markets in the Andes, before continuing south to reach the spectacular Devil’s Nose for a zigzag descent from the Andes towards the coastal plains.

The descent continues along the narrow Chanchán river gorge and an impressive cloud forest to reach Bucay.

Day 5

Bucay - Naranjito – Yaguachi – Durán (Guayaquil)

The journey from Bucay to Guayaquil is characterised by
changing landscapes as the diesel train leaves the tropical forest behind to pass through plantantions of rice, sugar cane, pineapple and bananas.

At Naranjito there is lunch at a traditional hacienda and a chance to learn about the growing and harvesting of the
cocoa bean.

The section from Yaguachi to Durán is once again by steam engine travelling across fields and plantations towards Guayaquil and the Pacific Ocean. On arrival at Duran station, transfer to your hotel in Guayaquil.
